For most of my life, I haven’t set goals. When I was a kid I decided I wanted to get a net worth of $1 million by the time I hit 30 and that’s about the only goal I’ve set in the past 10 years or so. Being without goals was hardly a hindrance for me though, as each year my income and net worth went up. Since I was heading in the right direction I felt goals were unnecessary. And for the most part, my goal-less system worked pretty well for me.
It seems lately that I’m in a bit of a rut when it comes to personal growth though. My income will be down from last year, even though my net worth will be higher. Even though I don’t track expenses that closely, I feel like my spending is starting to get a little out of control. Christmas does not help the ol’ budget folks.
For the first time ever, I’ve decided to set some goals for the next year. Some of them will be blog related while others will be more personal and income related. And this way I can bore you all with an update post in the middle of the year and one at the end of the year. You’re welcome.
1. Increase monthly traffic to 5000 visitors by July 2011 and to 10,000 visitors by Jan 2012
I currently sit at about 1500 unique visitors to the blog each month. I know that I’m currently not doing nearly enough to maximize this number, so I think reaching these numbers is realistic with some hard work. I need to improve my commenting on other blogs and building a relationship with other bloggers on Twitter. With a renewed dedication to networking I should be able to get this done.
2. Post guest posts at 15 different blogs
I’ve done a few guest posts in the past and I’ve enjoyed the experience. I enjoy the challenge of knowing I have to come up with good stuff or it won’t be posted. I joined one of those guest post websites and I’ve received quite a few submissions for guest posts here- most of which were pure crap. I’ll be figuring out which blogs are more agreeable to guest posts in the next little while and start the process. If you want me to guest post (or want to guest post here) just leave me a comment or email financialuproar [at] gmail.com.
3. Post 3 times per week for 150 total pieces in 2011
One of my biggest weaknesses as a blogger is neglecting this baby for long periods of time. Over the last few months I’ve gone weeks without posting, which isn’t the best thing to do if I want to grow. I’ve long since abandoned the hope that I can post everyday, at this point I just don’t have the writing skills or ambition to do it. I despise writing stupid posts that anyone could come up with and hopefully you readers have come to expect more from me than simplicity (and jokes! Lots and lots of jokes!) that any moron can do with the help of Google.
4. Have the Uproar Fund fully invested and get close to beating the market
I have certainly dropped the ball on the Uproar Fund. Look for more info on it coming up in the next few weeks, along with some new positions. I also plan to create a page where people can go to see how the fund is doing, what holdings it has, etc. The reason the goal is to get close to beating the market is because the fund is 95% cash right now and I need time to initiate positions. I figure on being close to fully invested by July or so.
1. Increase both income and net worth by 20% this year
If you read my about me page, I have a little bit about my thoughts on net worth. I still have no plans to disclose my net worth, especially since I’m just about ready to tell the world what I’ve been doing here. The last thing I need is for my friends to know what my net worth is. Rather I intend to use net worth as a personal barometer, something to hold myself accountable to.
Income will be quite easy to increase 20% since my business income has not been very good in 2010. Net worth will be a harder number to accomplish, but I’m confident I’ll be able to do it.
2. Make $15k in side income this year
Since I’m now the proud new owner of a PS3 (and the almost $400 price tag that went with it) I’ve decided to focus on making side income this year, partially to pay for my new hobby. I just started a gig working for a home builder sitting in open houses, a job that pays approximately $10k per year. All I have to do is make an additional $5k, an amount that will come partially from blogging and partially from other endeavours. For the purpose of this goal any investing or rental income will not count.
3. Touch boobs
I like boobs. Therefore, I would like to touch some. Preferably not man boobs though.
So there are my 7 goals. Just how many will I accomplish? I’m setting the over/under at 4.5. Place your bets! I’m thinking the smart money takes the under.
